macOS and Linux, on the hardware you have.
Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, 64-bit and 32-bit Linux, Raspberry Pi boards, and GPUs from four vendors.
Where Vantage runs.
| Platform | Runs on | Minimum |
|---|---|---|
| macOS, Apple Silicon | App and agent | App: macOS 10.15 (one universal build). Agent: macOS 11 |
| macOS, Intel | App and agent | macOS 10.15 (Catalina) |
| Linux x86_64 | Agent, and the app as .deb or .rpm | glibc 2.28: Debian 10, Ubuntu 20.04, RHEL 8 and newer |
| Linux arm64 | Agent, and the app as .deb, .rpm or AppImage | glibc 2.28. Raspberry Pi 3, 4 and 5 on a 64-bit OS, Oracle Ampere |
| Linux armv7 | Agent | glibc 2.28. Raspberry Pi 2, 3, 4 and 5 on a 32-bit OS |
Not supported: Windows, and the Raspberry Pi Zero and Pi 1 (ARMv6). The x86_64 AppImage is not offered; use the .deb or .rpm.
NVIDIA, AMD, Intel and Apple.
| GPU | What is read |
|---|---|
| NVIDIA | Name, driver, VRAM, load, temperature, power and processes, through NVML with a fallback to nvidia-smi |
| AMD | Load, VRAM, temperature and power from the kernel; processes of your own user (other users say "not visible without root") |
| Intel | Frequency, VRAM on discrete cards and temperature where exposed; load says "not exposed without root" unless a readable client shows it |
| Apple | Load and VRAM (shared memory); power and temperature need root, so they are not shown |
What you need.
- A network path between the app and each machine: TCP port 9736 open from the computer running the app. A tailnet is the usual choice.
- An observability server is optional. It runs on one of your machines and needs room for Loki and Prometheus; the app shows its memory use before you install.
- On Linux, the app needs a desktop keyring (GNOME Keyring or KWallet) to keep its key.
- To connect an AI client from Linux, install the .deb or .rpm. The AppImage cannot.
Mac, Linux and the agent.
macOS
- Open the DMG and drag Vantage to Applications.
- Open Vantage. See the first-launch notes below.
- Press Add machine, and pick This Mac to install its agent.
Linux app
sudo apt install ./Vantage_<version>_amd64.deb
sudo dnf install ./Vantage-<version>-1.x86_64.rpm
chmod +x Vantage_<version>_aarch64.AppImage && ./Vantage_<version>_aarch64.AppImage
Use arm64 or aarch64 in the file name on 64-bit ARM. The AppImage runs without installing.
The agent on a machine
The simplest way is from the app: Add machine over SSH installs, starts and pairs it in about a minute. To do it by hand, copy the agent build, install-agent.sh and the packaging folder to the machine and run the installer with sudo. Then pair:
sudo vantage pair
It prints an address, a one-time code and a fingerprint. Paste them into the app. The code works once, within 15 minutes.
What to expect, honestly.
The Mac build is self-signed. It is not notarized by Apple yet, so macOS asks you to confirm the first time.
- Open Vantage. macOS says "Vantage Not Opened". Close the message.
- Open System Settings, then Privacy & Security, scroll to the message about Vantage and press Open Anyway. Confirm with your password.
- Vantage then asks once for your login keychain password, because it keeps its key there. Choose Always Allow. A new build can ask once again, because its code identity changes.
- When Vantage first reaches your network, macOS asks to allow Local Network. If you declined, switch Vantage on in System Settings, Privacy & Security, Local Network.
- Installing an agent on this Mac opens macOS's own administrator password box. The password goes to macOS, never to Vantage.
On Linux, the app needs a running keyring. Without one it says so and connects to nothing until you start one and open Vantage again.
Install Vantage.
